"Rest In Plenty" is a parodic shopping platform for modern Chinese funerary paper offerings. The practice of burning offerings, which spans millennia, signifies the symbolic transfer of material blessings to the departed, enriching their existence in the afterlife.
Over time, while the core ritual has persevered, the nature of the offerings has transformed dramatically. What once was a list of traditional Chinese gifts has now expanded to encompass the eclectic mix of a modern capitalist era: from glistening multi-story villas, to the latest gadgets, and even imitation luxury bags (reference photos on the right). This archive, sourced from contemporary Chinese shopping platforms, offers not just a perspective on evolving conceptions of the ideal afterlife. More so, it mirrors a commonly aspired, “idealized” version of reality, that is often tokenized by the possession of such items beyond their own utility. As a collective, they propose to each of us that we can always transform ourselves, or our lives, by buying something more. Rendered forever anxious of the apparent deficiencies of our own lives, we slowly realize that the definition of happiness is no longer in our own hands.
In presenting these offerings, the project encourages the viewers to reflect upon expectations that shaped our day-to-day pursuits, the homogenisations of taste in the age of mass production, and what it means to be a consumer in wealthy democracies typified by today's global society, to reclaim a sense of control and agency.
